Breath Alcohol tests

Castle Hill Medical Centre can conduct Breath Alcohol tests to determine the amount of alcohol (ethanol) in the body.

Our trained staff perform Breath Alcohol testing consistent with AS3457:1997 requirements using calibrated, hand-held Type-2 electronic devices. A second positive breath alcohol test performed 15 minutes after the first positive is a legally defensible confirmatory result.

EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES HAVE A LEGAL DUTY-OF CARE TO ENSURE A SAFE AND HEALTHY WORKPLACE.

The use of alcohol becomes an occupational health and safety issue if a person’s ability to exercise judgment, coordination, motor control and alertness is affected, leading to an increased risk of injury and illness.

The alcohol-affected person may not be able to make an accurate assessment of their fitness for work. A person might be alcohol affected due to intoxication or due to hangover effects.

A breath alcohol test is an estimate of the blood alcohol concentration (BAC). The test measures the amount of alcohol in the air that is breathed out (exhaled).

ALCOHOL RELATED ABSENTEEISM IS VERY COSTLY TO AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES AND OFTEN OCCURS WHEN A WORKER HAS CONSUMED A LARGE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL THE PREVIOUS DAY.

RESEARCH REVEALS:

  • Up to 15 per cent of workplace injuries worldwide are attributable to drug and alcohol use.
  • Around 60 per cent of individuals who consume drugs and alcohol at harmful levels are in full time employment.
  • The economic cost of alcohol use in Australia is estimated at over $4.5billion per year with lost workplace production accounting for the largest proportion of this cost.
