“I graduated with a Degree in Nursing in 1992. After working in the wards at RNSH I went to work in Operating Theatres in St Vincents Public Hospital where I became a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Anaesthetics. During this time I worked in many specialties including the Cardiac Theatre and was involved in the Heart /Lung Transplant program.
I then worked at the SAN Operating Theatres and became Nurse Unit Manager of Anaesthetics. During this time I completed a three year Masters in Biomedical Ethics and was invited to sit on the Sydney Adventist Hospital Ethics Committee. During this time I was also a Lecturer at Avondale College for the Post Graduate Anesthetic and Recovery Room Course.
I have always been interested in aid work and was fortunate enough to be involved with overseas Aide Programs through ADRA – doing cardiac surgery in developing countries such as Fiji and Mongolia.
After leaving the SAN I went on to become the Nurse Unit Manager of Operating Theatres at Castlecrag Private Hospital. It was during this time my 10 year old daughter became sick with a complex chronic medical condition that required intensive medical treatment and as such had to give up work for 4 months.
It was during this time that I realized how vital a great GP is to the outcome of patient’s health. It was my GP that identified the unusual chronic disease my daughter had and was able to get her the care she needed at the Kids Hospital.
After my own personal experience with a daughter with a complex chronic condition I have become passionate about helping Patients in preventing or reducing the complications of chronic diseases.
Now I work at Castle Hill Medical Centre as a Preventative Health Nurse. I work closely with the GPs conducting comprehensive health assessments for patients over the age of 75, or those between 45-49, helping patients access the Team Care Arrangement program and refers patients to Allied Health Professional at a reduced rate from Medicare. I am also involved in Diabetic and Osteoporosis programs.
At Castle Hill Medical Centre we have a dedicated Preventative Health Team who conduct Health Assessments (bulk billed) and can arrange Team Care Arrangements for you with Allied Health Professionals that will assist you with managing chronic disease.
Preventative Health Management aims to:
• Improve access to quality, integrated Allied Health care providers
• Manage health and wellbeing
• Reduce unplanned hospital admissions
• Improve general quality of life and ability to do the normal activities of daily living
You should discuss with your Doctor whether a Chronic Disease Management Plan would benefit your ongoing health and wellbeing. Your Doctor can arrange an appointment for you with the Preventative Health Team. If you are unsure of whether you are eligible for these services or have questions related to Preventative Health and how it can benefit your chronic disease then please contact our Preventative Health Nurse – Cathie Hufton on 9634 5000.
